Navigating Life's Challenges

Our Mission and History

Since its founding in 1973, Maps Counseling Services has endeavored to integrate effective and compassionate psychotherapy with the guiding principles of spirituality in order to help people find meaningful answers to life's problems. This mission has guided us through challenging times and has helped us become the largest private provider of outpatient psychotherapy in the Monadnock Region.

Our History

Maps began its existence as a pastoral counseling agency, founded by a group of Keene ministers who believed that psychotherapy and spirituality were inherently bound by a commitment to caring for others. Indeed, our very name once stood for The Monadnock Area Pastoral Counseling Service (MAPCS). Years later it was shortened to MAPS for Monadnock Area Psychotherapy and Spirituality Services (MAPS), and then in 2017 it became Maps Counseling Services (Maps). Although we are no longer a pastoral agency, Maps continues to honor the importance of non-sectarian spirituality both in our practice and in our relationships with each other.

Our Services

At Maps Counseling Services, we believe that building a healthy supportive community of clinicians makes us each more effective in offering therapeutic support to each client. Our multidisciplinary clinical team is committed to attending to the whole person to promote emotional healing and overall health.

Our specialists work with children and adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, chronic pain, relationship conflicts, and substance misuse. We also offer support groups for individuals with cancer, grandparents raising grandchildren, and sometimes other support groups with a common theme.

We acknowledge the complex impact of trauma, and how the events of our lives shape our experience of ourselves and the world. We work in partnership with each client to navigate their life's journey towards health, connection, safety, and confidence.

Our Team

Our clinical team at Maps is a group of compassionate, skilled, and committed psychotherapists. We are also lifelong learners and sojourners in life and healing. Our clinicians are licensed as: Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Clinical Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Dance Movement Therapists, and Alcohol and Drug Counselors.

Our Commitment to Care

At Maps, we acknowledge the importance of non-sectarian spirituality in our practice and in our relationships with each other. We recognize that each individual's unique spirituality, including their gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual or religious beliefs, race and ethnicity, and cultural values, is essential to their care.

Our Philosophy of Care

We believe that honoring each client's human experience is essential to providing individualized, culturally sensitive care. We strive to recognize and integrate into each person's care all aspects of their identity, including gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual or religious beliefs, race and ethnicity, and cultural values. Treating each client with dignity and respect is a core commitment of Maps.

How We Offer Care

Primarily, we offer outpatient psychotherapy to individuals and/or families. We have licensed psychotherapists, clinical residents, and often doctoral and/or graduate students. Our clinicians work together with you towards health and wholeness.
