Empowering You to Navigate Life's Challenges
Our Story
At The Christian Counseling Center, our story began over two decades ago with a vision to provide the highest level of Christian counseling that would result in changed lives and have eternal impact in Columbia and throughout the world. Founded in the late 1980s, our center was born out of the desire to serve both the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, South Carolina, and the local community. Today, we are proud to have grown to include a team of thirteen Licensed Professional Counselors, six Licensed Professional Counseling Associates, one Staff Psychiatrist, five administrative staff, and countless opportunities for graduate intern counselors.
Our Philosophy
At The Christian Counseling Center, we believe that Christian counseling involves the therapeutic application of empathetic listening, discerning insight, and practical strategies, as well as the careful application of the Word of God, directly or indirectly, to the situations presented to the counselor. We believe that the therapeutic process should be collaborative, with the client and counselor working together to seek truth and apply that truth to daily living.
Our Services
We offer a range of services designed to support individuals and families through life's challenges. Our services include:
- Individual Counseling: A customized course of treatment tailored to meet each client's individual needs.
- Psychiatric Services: Outpatient medication management, available through our Staff Psychiatrist.
- Group Counseling: Opportunities for individuals to connect with others who are facing similar challenges and receive support and guidance from our trained therapists.
Why Choose Us?
At The Christian Counseling Center, we are committed to providing a safe, confidential, and compassionate environment for individuals to share their struggles and work towards healing and growth. Our team of experienced and licensed therapists are dedicated to helping individuals find hope and resilience in the face of adversity. We believe that every individual deserves access to quality counseling services, regardless of their ability to pay. That's why we offer financial assistance programs to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to receive the help they need.
Our Theology
We believe that Christian counseling is a holistic approach that integrates the principles of Scripture with evidence-based practices. We believe that the Bible provides a foundation for understanding human nature, relationships, and the human condition. Our therapists are trained to apply biblical principles in a way that is respectful of each client's unique experiences and cultural background.
Client Testimonials
We are proud to share testimonials from satisfied clients who have found healing and hope through our services. One client shared that our counseling assistance program was a "lifesaver" during a difficult time, while another client praised their therapist for providing a safe and supportive environment for processing their trauma. We are humbled by the opportunity to serve our clients and grateful to be a part of their healing journeys.
Unsatisfactory Experience with the Counseling Program
The reviewers shared negative experiences with the counseling program, citing concerns over the therapist's behavior, ethics, and handling of client issues.
Lack of Effective Therapy and Unprofessional Treatment
Katherine Kip and Betty Zhao both expressed disappointment and frustration with the counseling they received. Katherine mentioned having "serious ethical complaints" that were ignored by the therapist and the director, which led to her nearly losing everything under their care. Betty was unhappy with the counselor's response to her husband's unexpected job relocation, which required him to drop out of the program half-way through. The counselor was offended and charged the couple $700 for the terminated services.
Lack of Christian Values and Care
Katherine and Betty both felt that the counselor lacked Christian values and care. Katherine explicitly stated that she was told to "pray it away" and that she was reminded that she is "second to her husband." Betty felt that the counselor only cared about losing a payment and showed no concern for her husband's well-being.
