Embrace your journey. Empower your growth.
Welcome to my private practice, where I, Shawnese Givens, am dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space for individuals, couples, and families to navigate life's challenges and obstacles. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have been in practice since 2010, and I have had the privilege of working with clients from diverse backgrounds and identities.
About Me
As a therapist, I have dedicated my career to promoting social justice and advocating for marginalized communities. My professional journey has taken me through various roles, including family therapist, substance abuse counselor, and clinical supervisor. I have also worked as the Interim Executive Director of The Attic Youth Center and currently serve as the Executive Director of JRI Health. My clients have come from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals, families with youth, and those affected by trauma.
Services and Specialization
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I offer a range of services to help clients address their concerns. These services include:
Individual Therapy
For adults and adolescents aged 13+, individual therapy provides a safe space to explore one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through individual therapy, individuals can develop coping strategies, improve self-awareness, and gain insight into their relationships and coping mechanisms.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy is designed to help individuals and their partners improve their relationships, enhance intimacy, and develop effective communication strategies. As a kink and poly-affirming therapist, I strive to create a safe and welcoming environment for all couples.
Family Therapy
Family therapy provides a supportive environment for families with youth aged 13+ to address concerns related to parenting, communication, and relationships. By exploring family dynamics and relationships, we can develop coping strategies and improve overall family connectedness.
LGBTQ+ Wellness
As a clinician specializing in LGBTQ+ concerns, I am committed to providing a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones. My expertise in queer and feminist perspectives enables me to address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including the impact of oppression and marginalization.
Clinical Supervision
As an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, I offer clinical supervision to mental health professionals, focusing on personal and professional growth, exploring the Self of the Therapist, and identifying clinical passions.
About Therapy
Therapy is a collaborative process that examines the complex systems at play in a client's life. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I use a systemic lens to understand mental health issues, recognizing the impact of social location, family of origin, and relational dynamics on a client's life. In therapy, we work at your pace to build a relationship, uncover the underlying issues contributing to your concerns, and develop coping strategies and tools to support change.
Logistics
Sessions are 50 minutes long and cost $200 per session. I offer a limited number of sliding scale slots for individuals with financial concerns. I am not in-network with insurance companies, but you can request a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.
